Chapter 14 shows how hard it can be when you bring Christ to others. There were people who constantly told lies about Paul and Barnabas that conditioned people not to believe. They became violent against them. Paul heals a crippled man by the power of Jesus. The people think that they are gods. They start to offer sacrifices for them. Paul and Barnabas tear their garments and tell the people not to do this, but they would not listen. Instead, a group of people from Iconium (the previous town) that did not believe in what they preached came to town (Lystra), and the people believed those who opposed Paul and Barnabas. What a strange turn of events. Paul heals a man and they think he is a god. Paul then tries to correct them. They don’t listen to Paul, but those who lie about him and end up stoning him think he is dead. Continue reading “Bible: Acts of the Apostles 9”

Chapter 16 is where Paul meets Timothy who later gets ordained a bishop by Paul (2 Tm 1:6). Paul starts with a town called Derbe. It is close to his old stomping grounds where he grew up (Tarsus). It is on the northeast corner of the Mediterranean Sea. He gradually goes west and ends up in Macedonia, which is in the northwest part of Greece. Continue reading “Bible: Acts of the Apostles 11”
Doubting Sola Scriptura: My Road to Rome, Part 1
Steven D. Greydanus
As a young Evangelical in college, I wasn’t impressed with the Catholic arguments I encountered. On one point, though, I wasn’t entirely satisfied with my own answers either.
Two of the most important books in my journey from Evangelicalism to Catholicism were a pair of older apologetical works — one anti-Catholic and one Catholic — which I found laughably unconvincing when I first encountered them in college some 30 years ago, and which I set out to refute at length. …

Bible: Acts of the Apostles 10
Chapter 15 of the Acts of the Apostles begins with the first Church Council the Catholic Church has ever had. The Council of Jerusalem made a major pivotal decision on the issue of circumcision. Circumcision was established by God as mandatory for all Jewish men in order to partake of the covenant God offered to Abraham (Lv 12:3 &Gen 17:1-14). But in this process, the people are becoming more and more aware that they are not a sect of the Jewish faith. Peter challenges those present to put their faith in the promise of the grace of Jesus the Christ (Acts 15:7 & 11). Continue reading “Bible: Acts of the Apostles 10”
Bible: Acts of the Apostles 7
Chapter twelve accounts the death of the First Apostle James and the arrest of Peter. Herod wants to be popular among the people and has many guards to guard him. The biblke states that there were four squads of four guards. Doing the math, that means sixteen guards were guarding Peter to keep him in jail. He was shakled by “double chains”. Two chains are holding Peter in place and two guards are right next to him on each side. Two guards are right outside the door and the others are about the place. Sounds like he is heavily guarded. Does this have anything to do with the resurrection of Jesus and only the two at Jesus’ tomb? Who knows. Either way, Peter getting out is not a very likely prospect.
Bible, Acts of the Apostles 6
Chapter 11 explains what Peter went through. We start to see the timing of Paul’s conversion and Peter’s experience. It was in preparation for Paul to be the apostle to the Gentiles. In verse 19, this plan begins to be revealed. Because of the persecution of Stephen, which Paul encouraged, Paul is now coming to Antioch. Continue reading “Bible, Acts of the Apostles 6”

Jesus said that the truth will set you free. Jesus gave us the magisterium to ensure that the truth would be preserved so that we can take advantage of this promise. The truth then can prove to be the wisdom of God and everything noble. We have the fullness of the truth in the Catholic Church. Rejoice!
