Pro-Life Corner

“The state has an interest (responsibility) in protecting the poor, the elderly and disabled persons. The lives of the disabled and elderly must be no less valuable than the lives of young and healthy … The difficulty in defining terminal illness and the risk that a dying patient’s request for assistance in ending his or her life might not be truly voluntary justifies the prohibitions on assisted suicide we uphold here.” – Chief Justice William Rehnquist

Warning: Humanae Vitae Can Change Your Life!

It seems like only yesterday that I was introduced to Humanae Vitae through a class on the theology of the body, but in truth, it has been nearly 20 years.

During the summer of 1999, when I was working for the Archdiocese of Denver raising money for the inner-city Catholic schools, a young intern knocked on my door and invited me to join a theology of the body class she was offering. Even though I had never heard of Pope St. John Paul II’s “theology of the body,” she and I had the beginnings of a warm friendship, and so without hesitation, I signed up. I didn’t realize…

Why Is There Hell? What You Should Know About It!

(This Lighthouse cd can be found on the cd rack)
In this moving study on hell, Dr. Scott Hahn shares what scripture teaches about why hell is necessary. What it is like? Who goes there? How can you stay out forever? He explains why Lucifer refused to serve and then responds from a scriptural perspective to the most seductive modern errors about hell. Included are two bonus excerpts from Dr. Hahn’s talk, The Healing Power of Confession.
Parishioner Comments This is a great CD! It gives the theological basis for hell. For me, it also highlighted the need for continued conversion throughout life. Chad – St. Michael, MN
This scriptural approach to the reasons for hell is challenging and enlightening. It put the love of God in our hearts, not fear. Grass Roots Prayer Group – NY

Day #159: Baptism of blood? Baptism of desire?

How does an unbaptized person receive the baptism of blood? An unbaptized person receives the baptism of blood when he suffers martyrdom for the faith of Christ.

Greater love than this no one has, that one lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

How does an unbaptized person receive the baptism of desire? An unbaptized person receives the baptism of desire when he loves God above all things and desires to do all that is necessary for his salvation.

If anyone love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him. (John 14:23)
