St Mary Church Debt Elimination

I know many people have questions about the money situation for St Mary Church. St Mary Church currently has a debt of about $237,000. Because we do not make enough to pay our bills, we are looking at a deeper debt by next July. Some parishioners have come together with me to start a debt elimination strategy. Debt does not go away by itself; there must be a plan, and we need everyone to help. Continue reading

A couple articles ago we went through the object of the act, the intentions and circumstances. The object of the act answers primarily the question: Is this act good or bad? Killing somebody is a bad act and can never be made into a good act. However, piety is a good act, but still can have a lack of goodness in it by doing the act with pride. The intentions and circumstances answer the other question: How responsible am I in the act (culpability)? They also help us to discern if the act has a lack of goodness. So now we go back to the object of the moral act. The object of the act discerns if the act is good or bad at its foundation. Acts of piety are by nature good. Killing another innocent person is bad. Killing another person is always bad, but acts of piety are not. Why? Continue reading

Now that we have gone over actions that are by nature bad and good (“Object” of the act), we can also see that there are some actions that are neutral. The classic example from St Thomas Aquinas is scratching a beard. Scratching a beard has no moral implication at all. However, there may be implications of morals when we look at the circumstances or intent. But we will get to that later. It seems humans get pretty crafty in their sins and St Thomas Aquinas knows just about every scenario humans have made up. Continue reading
