What's new for St Joseph and St Mary Parishes!

Time and Talent Survey

Next weekend we will introduce a Time and Talent Survey in response to the Pew Survey last January. We really appreciate your responses and are looking forward to responding with concrete solutions. But we need your help in finding and implementing these solutions. Our hope is to find people who are willing to help fill the needs of our community. Right now, we have a limited number of helpers. Are there people willing to step up and help us be an Amazing Parish? We need people to do the ground work and people who are willing to co-coordinate various ministries. After the survey, we hope to identify those people who would serve as the new combined parish council as well.

There will be an insert in the bulletin next week (September 16 and 17) which is a copy of the survey we will present the week after (September 23 and 24). Please take the time to think about what you do already and what you are willing to do. You might be thinking of doing something more or switching things up a bit. When discerning what to do, the question you want to ask God is what He is calling you to do. Pray about it for the week. Notice that there is a space called, “Other” in every section in case you think of a need that you would be willing to help out with or co-coordinate. We are always open to recognizing a need that has developed in the past few years.

Pray about what gifts and talents God has given you. Part of discerning God’s will, is looking at what talents He has already given you. It is about God’s will and about your willingness to do it. God has given you the ability to choose to do it or not because you are the one making the sacrifice. Are you willing to make the sacrifice for the ministry God wants for you? This will be an opportunity to give back to God. Has God given you talents in singing, reading, organizing, leading, prayer, compassion or listening? Are you good at working with your hands like cooking, gardening, painting or home repair? Is there something that has been totally missed? Is there something God has chosen for you that we have overlooked? The best time to discern God’s will for you is in Adoration. The second-best time is while praying the rosary.

We will receive the survey next week and, during Mass, fill it out the week after. We will be given about five minutes to fill them out. They will be placed in front of the altar as our sacrifice to God. Make sure you fill out the portion for the contact information, phone number and/or email address. A person should contact you within a month after the survey. If this does not happen, please call the office to check up.

Also, a special note for those who have not yet taken the “Protecting God’s Children program” required by the diocese. Please take advantage of this program. We will be offering it again after the Time and Talent Survey so you can get caught up.

Doing God’s will is a service to God, but it is also a service God does for us. Blessings always come when we open ourselves to Him. As Jesus says in Luke, chapter 6, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured out to you” (Lk 6:38). We look forward for those blessings on us and our parish communities. Through the help we receive in our volunteers, may Jesus truly make our Parishes Amazing!

We are two Catholic Churches close to downtown Freeport, IL. Our communities are over 150 years old and have been dedicated to our lord Jesus Christ since our inception. We believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was concieved by the Holy Spirit, born of ythe Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilot, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
